Secondary<\/li>\n<li>Higher Education<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Primary\"><\/span>Primary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Primary schools in Malaysia are from grades 1 to 6 and they are compulsory. The primary schools follow the regular Malaysian National Curriculum. The curriculum includes the following subjects<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first language is taught. The first language can be Bahasa Melayu, Chinese, or Tamil.<\/li>\n<li>English is taught as a second language.<\/li>\n<li>Islamic education is compulsory for Muslims.<\/li>\n<li>Maths.<\/li>\n<li>Science.<\/li>\n<li>Civics or Moral Education.<\/li>\n<li>Local studies.<\/li>\n<li>Physical education.<\/li>\n<li>Health Education.<\/li>\n<li>Visual arts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To get qualified for secondary school, at the end of primary school, the students take the Primary School Achievement Test. This test rates the written abilities of the students and their speaking ability in the Malay and English languages, math, and science concepts. After this test, the students are automatically progressed to secondary school.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Lower_Secondary\"><\/span>Lower Secondary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Lower Secondary is not compulsory and it counts as the grades from 6-9. The students at this level attend the school with the national language Bahasa Melayu. Chinese and Tamil students, who are willing to attend lower secondary school have to do a transitional year before getting admission to this level. The transitional year is known as \u201cRemove Class\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>At the lower secondary level, the students study the following subjects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bahasa Melayu<\/li>\n<li>English<\/li>\n<li>Science<\/li>\n<li>History<\/li>\n<li>Geography<\/li>\n<li>Math<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The elective subjects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Islamic studies<\/li>\n<li>Moral Education<\/li>\n<li>Life skills<\/li>\n<li>European languages<\/li>\n<li>Mother tongue language<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the end of this level, the students take PMR, Lower Secondary Assessment. They give the tests in 7 to 9 subjects. To continue to upper secondary school, a student must pass this test.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Upper_Secondary\"><\/span>Upper Secondary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the upper secondary the student has to select from 3 types of schools. The 3 types of schools are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Academic: In academics, they have the option to select either from the arts stream or the science stream.<\/li>\n<li>Technical and Vocational: In this type, the student can select from the technical, vocational, or skills training stream.<\/li>\n<li>Religious<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Despite the type of school they are going to select, they would have to study four core subjects. The students are offered these studies at the following schools:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>National secondary schools<\/li>\n<li>Technical secondary schools<\/li>\n<li>Pre-university or sixth-form colleges<\/li>\n<li>Islamic schools and some universities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are 2 streams. The core subjects are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Math<\/li>\n<li>Chemistry<\/li>\n<li>Physics<\/li>\n<li>Biology<\/li>\n<li>Computer science<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are 3 streams.
