Education Level list in Malaysia

Education System Levels in Malaysia

The education system in Malaysia includes the following levels:

  • 6 years of Primary Education
  • 3 Years of Lower Secondary
  • 2 years of Upper Secondary
  • 2 years of Pre-University Senior Secondary
  • Higher Education

Primary

Primary schools in Malaysia are from grades 1 to 6 and they are compulsory. The primary schools follow the regular Malaysian National Curriculum. The curriculum includes the following subjects

  • The first language is taught. The first language can be Bahasa Melayu, Chinese, or Tamil.
  • English is taught as a second language.
  • Islamic education is compulsory for Muslims.

To get qualified for secondary school, at the end of primary school, the students take the Primary School Achievement Test. This test rates the written abilities of the students and their speaking ability in the Malay and English languages, math, and science concepts. After this test, the students are automatically progressed to secondary school.

Lower Secondary

Lower Secondary is not compulsory and it counts as the grades from 6-9. The students at this level attend the school with the national language Bahasa Melayu. Chinese and Tamil students, who are willing to attend lower secondary school have to do a transitional year before getting admission to this level. The transitional year is known as “Remove Class”.

At the lower secondary level, the students study the following subjects:

  • Bahasa Melayu
  • English
  • Science
  • History
  • Geography
  • Math

The elective subjects include:

  • Islamic studies
  • Moral Education
  • Life skills
  • European languages
  • Mother tongue language

At the end of this level, the students take PMR, Lower Secondary Assessment. They give the tests in 7 to 9 subjects. To continue to upper secondary school, a student must pass this test.

Upper Secondary

In the upper secondary the student has to select from 3 types of schools. The 3 types of schools are:

  • Academic: In academics, they have the option to select either from the arts stream or the science stream.
  • Technical and Vocational: In this type, the student can select from the technical, vocational, or skills training stream.
  • Religious

Despite the type of school they are going to select, they would have to study four core subjects. The four core subjects are

  • Bahasa Melayu
  • English
  • Math
  • Islamic studies or Moral Education and History

Academic

Academic Science Stream

The students who select this stream must take the following subjects:

  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Physics
  • Additional Math
  • English

Academic Arts Stream

The students who select this stream must take integrated science and a variety of non-science subjects in their electives.

The students can take only 13 subjects altogether.

Technical and Vocational

Technical Stream

  • The courses offered in this stream are:
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Agriculture
  • Commerce
  • Food management
  • Fashion studies.

Vocational Stream

In the vocational stream, students can choose from:

  • Electrics
  • Automotive
  • Catering
  • Computer programming.

Secondary Schools

Pre-University

The pre-university is for 2 years and it is divided into Lower Sixth Form and Upper Sixth Form. The students are offered these studies at the following schools:

  • National secondary schools
  • Technical secondary schools
  • Pre-university or sixth-form colleges
  • Islamic schools and some universities.

There are 2 streams. Humanities and Science.

Matriculation

Its length is one year and has 2 semesters. The core subjects are:

  • Math
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Biology
  • Computer science

There are 3 streams. Science, Accountancy, and Technical.

Higher Education
